![]() ![]() ![]() On the album's first cut, "Runaway! Johnny!!!," he's joined by ex-Stray Cat Brian Setzer and sounds as if he was born to rockabilly. H OTEI IS AN ENVIABLY gifted guitarist, composer and lyricist and if there is a musical style he's not comfortable with, it's difficult to guess what it is. Director Ken Kwapis fills the movie with feeble references to Planet of the Apes and King Kong that don't amuse adults and sail over the heads of tykes who snicker most at the rude noises Dunston blows at anyone he meets. For a slapstick kids' comedy, there's an awful lot of dreary plotting here: Dunston's master is mistaken for a hotel inspector and treated with inordinate respect by the establishment's imperious owner (Dunaway, looking smashing) and manager (Alexander). Monkey Shines Dunston Checks In Faye Dunaway, Jason Alexanderĭ UNSTON IS A JEWEL thief orangutan who checks into a swanky Manhattan hotel to rob the guests. ![]() The movie sounded like a promising idea - the Jekyll-and-Hyde saga told from the housekeeper's point of view - but director Stephen Frears reduces the three major characters to drawing-room stiffs who sit around explaining their passion instead of acting on it. Unfortunately, there's no demonic joy to Malkovich's performance. We know what she doesn't: that her employer, the dour, fastidious Dr. R OBERTS' MARY REILLY IS a frightened wisp of a young woman with a face so milky pale it stands out like the moon glowing through haze. Two to Tangle Mary Reilly Julia Roberts, John Malkovich Here he opts to be more involved in portraying the main figures, which leads to some overly melodramatic scenes. Yim usually brings an intellectual bearing to his work and represents his characters with objectivity. The story depicts a woman who realizes she can make a difference and isn't afraid to meet the challenge. She leaves her vacillating husband but finds that her new companion's cruelty is something despicable. It stars mainland actress Zhang (who produced the $1.2 million period drama with her own money) as a peasant who falls for the local military leader (You) during China's chaotic Warlord era of the early '20s.
